OSBI Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Mayes County

Wednesday afternoon, a Sportsman Acres officer was called to a residence at 101 Quail Drive due to a man barricading himself inside a bedroom at his home and making suicidal statements. Initial information gathered at the scene indicates when the officer arrived on scene, Sammy Monroe Echols, Junior, 51, came out of the residence with a rifle in his hand. The officer told him to put down the rifle. Echols did as instructed, but moments later he picked up the rifle again and pointed it at the officer. The officer shot Echols. He was taken to the Mayes County hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. The Mayes County Sheriff's Office requested OSBI investigate the case. Once a written report is completed, an agent will deliver it to the district attorney who will determine if the shooting was justified.
