Ways to Help the Homeless in Your Community this Winter
This time of year, residents often ask how they can help the homeless population in their area. SHPD discourages residents from providing food, clothing, recyclables, money, etc. in local parks and in public places because that typically leads to an increase in crime. However, there are other ways you can help! If you know someone in your community who may be homeless, please refer them to local shelters and/or services. Here are a few shelters and/or services in the area (please call ahead as some do have waiting lists): 1) Long Beach Family Shelter (562) 591-1351; 2) Long Beach Rescue Mission Services for Women and Children (562) 570-4900; 3) Long Beach Rescue Mission Samaritan House (562) 591-1292; Beyond Shelter-Homeless Services (562) 733-1147.
