Holiday Safety Message from the RUPD

The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) would like to wish the University community a safe and happy holiday season.

When preparing to leave for break, please take extra care to safeguard your possessions by properly securing your living spaces, work stations, and vehicles. Your role in crime prevention cannot be overstated and each member of our community can further assist the RUPD by recognizing and practicing the following crime prevention tips during the holidays:

•Please ensure your residence and/or office is secure by locking the doors and windows and closing the blinds.
•Take your valuables (laptops, cell phones, MP3 players, jewelry, game systems, etc) with you. Do not leave these items unattended and unsecured in your residence, work station, or vehicle.
•Lock your vehicle and do not leave packages or other valuables in plain view on the interior.
•Do not leave notes on your door or social media announcing you are not around.
•In the event you have to leave valuables behind, please record the make, model, and serial number of all items.
•Please take precautions in advance by reporting faulty locks that are in need of repair.
•Do not carry large sums of money while shopping.
•If you are shopping at more than one place, lock all purchased items in your trunk or some other area of your vehicle out of view.
•Insure that all credit cards are returned to your wallet or purse after purchases.
•If it is not necessary to carry a large purse, leave it home and carry a wallet that may be secured in a pocket.
•If a large purse is carried, place the strap over the shoulder and hold the bag under your arm close to the body.

If you are remaining on campus over the break, please continue to follow reasonable precautions. Members of the Rutgers community can reduce their chances of becoming a crime victim by walking in groups at night, remaining alert and aware of their surroundings and immediately reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement. Security escorts on campus will continue to be available for students, faculty, and staff upon request. The escorts, primarily walking, provide our community with personalized service to their vehicles, campus residence, or the University's mass transit system. To request a security escort, please contact the RUPD at the following non-emergency numbers:

Rutgers University-Camden: 856-225-6111
