Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel times in the United States. According to the US Department of Transportation, 91% of Thanksgiving trips will be made by car.
In 2014, over the Thanksgiving weekend, 45 people died in collisions on California roadways; a 36 percent increase from the same period in 2013 (California Highway Patrol).
The following are some tips to help you arrive at your destination safely:
- Keep your eyes on the road and stay off your cell phone
- - Do NOT drink and drive
- - Wear your seatbelt
- - Be rested and stay alert
- - Observe speed limits
- - If you are too tired, stop and get rest
- - Allow enough time to get to your destination and leave early
- - Be prepared for inclement weather
- - Carry an emergency preparedness kit with you
- - Do not follow vehicles too closely
