Internet-Based Scam Alert
The Jackson Police Department is investigating several cases involving scams where individuals are hired to package and ship items and are then paid with counterfeit checks. The Jackson Police Department wants the community to be aware of this scheme.
Over the past several months, investigators have identified several members within the community who have been victimized by this scam. These victims enrolled or were solicited to work from home as logistic employees for various companies for an average salary of $2,000 a month. Victims found out about the job most often through Career Builder and other Internet sites.
The employer ships various packages to the employee and the employee then repackages and labels the items. Once repackaged and labeled, the employee ships the items to another location within the United States or overseas. The employee is later given a check for the agreed amount. When the employee attempts to cash the check, it is discovered to be counterfeit.
Meanwhile, this investigation has also revealed that the packages are filled with merchandise from actual retail providers that were purchased with stolen credit card information.
The suspects usually target college students because it is easy money for little work.
