Two Injured in Crash on SR 3

Henry County- This morning around 7:00 a.m., Troopers responded to the area of SR 3 near CR 200 North, Henry County, for a two vehicle crash.  When they arrived they found a 1995 Case tractor backhoe in the east ditch of SR 3, and a 2012 Freightliner also in the east ditch of SR 3.

Preliminary investigation indicates the 2012 Freightliner, driven by Shane Thomas, age 58, of Lafayette, IN, was southbound on SR 3 in the right hand lane, when he looked down at his gauges.  Mr. Thomas stated the next thing that happened was striking the 1995 Case tractor backhoe, driven by Robert Kirby, age 58, of New Castle, IN.  After the crash, both vehicles went across both southbound lanes of SR 3 and both northbound lanes of SR 3 before coming to a complete stop on the east side of SR 3.  Mr. Thomas was cited at the scene for speed too fast to avoid collision.

A medical helicopter was summoned to the scene and transported Mr. Kirby to an Indianapolis area hospital.  Mr. Thomas was transported to the Henry County Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

SR 3 was closed from around 7:00 a.m. until approximately 10:00 a.m.  SR 3 is now open at this time.

The Indiana State Police were assisted at the scene by New Castle Police Department; Henry County Sheriff's Department; New Castle Fire Department; Henry County EMS; and Henry County EMA.
