Advisory

Scam Targeting college students

(U) From November 17th through November 18th, the FBI Bedford Resident Agency (RA) has received approximately 30 telephone calls from Dartmouth College students claiming to have received calls from the FBI Bedford RA telephone number, 603-472-2224. A number of students have stated that the caller represents himself as a FBI Special Agent and threatens to arrest them immediately if they hang up. The caller tells the students to “Google” the telephone number to see that it comes back to the FBI Bedford RA. The students are told they owe taxes, specifically an Education Tax, and they will be arrested and/or not receive their college degree if they refuse to pay. The caller tells the students the arrest warrant will be canceled if they pay immediately.
(U) The FBI Bedford RA currently knows of one victim who sent approximately $3,300 through a Money Gram wire transfer with a supposed destination of Tennessee. The money was sent to a Richard Glenn Nicholson and a Gregory Lee Spangler (no further information).
(U) This information is being released for awareness purposes. Any agency or individual with information regarding this scam is asked to contact the FBI Bedford Resident Agency at 603-472-2224.
