DATE/TIME: Sunday, November 15, 2015
INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Deep Creek, Apple Valley
VICTIM(S): Travis Hughes, 29 years old, Rancho Cucamonga
SUMMARY: On Sunday, November 15, 2015, Travis Hughes was in the Bowen Ranch area of Deep Creek when he began suffering from a medical condition. Hughes was unable to walk and after some time, began suffering from hypothermia. Other hikers in the area called 911 and requested assistance for Hughes.
Sheriff's Aviation 40King1, with a crew of Deputies Jon Roberg and Carlos Quezada, responded in an attempt to locate Hughes. After a brief search, the crew located Hughes and determined he would need to be hoist rescued due to his condition and the remote area. Hughes was also in mountain terrain.
Sheriff's Air Rescue06, with a crew of Pilot Corporal Mike Gilley, Air Medic Crew Chief Wayne Hess, and Sheriff's Air Medics Dr. Robert Katzer and Paramedic Bernie Horak, responded to the scene and arrived at approximately 4:40 p.m. As Gilley hovered the aircraft over the victim, Hess lowered Katzer and Horak to Hughes with the use of the hoist. Katzer and Horak placed Hughes into a litter and Hess hoisted him into the helicopter. Hess hoisted Katzer and Horak back into the helicopter, and the crew transported Hughes to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment.
