Correction:One Dead in 14 Vehicle Crash
An Indianapolis man was killed last evening when the semi he was driving ran into the back of stopped traffic on I-70 west bound at the 127 mile marker. The traffic had been stopped for a construction zone at the 123 mile marker.
Joseph D Buie, age 43 of Indianapolis, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Henry County Coroner. Around 8:20 p.m. troopers responded to a report of a multi vehicle crash with one semi fully engulfed in flames. When they arrived they found the crash involved nine semis and five passenger vehicles.
A truck hauling coal burst into flames as it ran into the rear of the multiple vehicle crash. The occupants of that truck were transported with serious injuries by medical helicopter. All told five medical helicopters were summoned to the scene, with four landing and transporting patients to Indianapolis area hospitals, some with serious injuries.
I-70 west bound was closed from around 8:30 p.m., with traffic being diverted off onto State Road 1 at the 137 mile marker, Cambridge City Exit. The west bound lanes were still closed at 2:30 a.m. as crews worked to remove the snarled wreckage.
Eight area fire departments responded to assist, as well as numerous EMS services, the Henry County Sheriff's Department, New Castle Police, INDOT and Delaware County EMA.
It will be days before investigators piece together exactly what happened, and before the names of all those involved can be compiled and released.
