Jackson Police Department's Awards Ceremony 2015

Since the inception of the awards procedure, the Jackson Police Department has recognized officers and citizens, of this community, for meritorious acts, professional accomplishments and acts of exceptional valor in exceptional circumstances.

The classification and requirement for awards presented here today are as follows:

The Police Medal of Valor – Ranked next in prominence to the Police Medal of Honor.
It is awarded for exceptional bravery while exposed to an imminent risk of serious bodily injury, by demonstrating exceptional courage in an extremely dangerous situation.

The Police Medal of Merit – Ranked next in prominence to the Police Medal of Valor.
It is awarded for meritorious service where professional performance was exceptional regarding a specific situation or project or for sustained superior performance over a period of time.

The Police Life-Saving Medal – Is awarded to an officer for saving or prolonging a human life. Evidence, such as a statement from witnesses, physicians, or supervisors must justify this award.

The Police Purple Heart – Is awarded to an officer of the Department who suffers serious bodily injury as the direct result of hostile acts against the officer in the line of duty. Such as an assault or from gunfire, burns, explosion, or other such incident. Serious bodily injury is an injury, which results in disfigurement, extreme physical pain, impairment of anybody member or organ, or protracted unconsciousness.

Citizen’s Certificate of Merit- Awarded to persons who display excellence in performing civic responsibilities to their fellow citizens and the community and whose action brings honor to themselves and recognition to the city.
