JACKSON POLICE DEPT. RECOGNIZES FORENSIC
SEXUAL ASSAULT NURSE EXAMINERS (SANE)


November 09 - 13, 2015, is Forensic Nurses Week recognizing nurses worldwide who provide exceptional care every day to men, women, and children who have experienced violence or trauma.

In Jackson, Madison County, we have a very special group of Nurses who provide exceptional patient care as well as serving the interest of justice as clinicians who specialize in the collection and preservation of potential evidence in cases of sexual violence. Although he or she is a nurse first, this healthcare professional possesses knowledge of the legal system and expertise in forensic sciences. After meeting a patient’s healthcare and psychosocial needs, the forensic nurse collects evidence, provides medical testimony in court, and consults with legal authorities. We are very fortunate to partner with West Tennessee Healthcare / Jackson Madison County General Hospital where our SANEs practice. By supporting the practice of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, our community ensures that those who are affected by violence and abuse receive the specialized care they deserve—and forges or strengthens a vital link to ensure the administration of justice.

JMCGH SANEs are a small but committed group of nurses whose accomplishments are largely unsung. Our SANEs rotate being on call. Their SANE job is in addition to their regular full-time nursing jobs. Since the program inception in 2005, Jackson’s SANEs have provided medical care and support to patients throughout the region and preserved potentially valuable evidence for law enforcement and prosecutors all over West Tennessee.
