Lake County-A motorcyclist died this afternoon in a crash on I-65 north bound at the 258.9 mile marker (exit for I-80 west bound ramp).
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Khari Walton revealed, at approximately 2:07 p.m., a 2010 Harley Davidson Road King was north bound in the left lane when for unknown reasons it went off the road to the left and hit the concrete median barrier wall. This caused the motorcycle and rider to cross back into north bound traffic; at one point the motorcyclist came off the bike and rolled into the left lane of the I-65 north bound to I-80 west bound ramp (there are two lanes for this ramp). The motorcyclist was hit by a 2016 Freightliner straight truck, driven by a 42 year old male from Chicago. The Freightliner driver could not avoid the biker as he rolled across into his lane.
The Harley stayed upright and went across all lanes of I-65 and the ramp, and hit the barrier wall on the outside shoulder. The bike then stayed upright and went approximately 150 yards without a driver until it fell over in between the left/right lanes of the I-80 west bound ramp.
The motorcyclist, Cory Mayberry, 60 of Portage, Indiana, was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy with the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Family has been notified.
The left lane was open during reconstruction of the crash, removal of the deceased and the vehicles.
Damage to the Harley Davidson was minimal.
