Marietta Police Department announces the success of the MPD Citizen Volunteer Program.
In 2012, the MPD Citizen Volunteer Program was established as a result of frequent recommendations from graduates of the MPD Citizen’s Police Academy. There were numerous Marietta citizens who possessed tremendous talents, skills and life experiences that were willing to contribute on a volunteer basis to assist the department. With the large response from local citizens, the MPD Citizen Volunteer Program quickly became a large and integral part of the police department.
At conception, the MPD had approximately 20 volunteers that participated in the program. As of today there are almost 50 volunteers that assist in numerous areas throughout the week and the volunteer program continues to grow. This year to date the volunteers have put in over 2,800 hours and still have two months to go before the end of the year. Some of the biggest accomplishments of the volunteer program include working the bus detail for Marietta Middle School, assisting in apartment complex ordinances, patrol areas with high amount of vandalism or burglaries, assist with road closures and directing traffic to free up uniform patrol.
Some of the other volunteer assignments include:
• Courts
• Detectives
• Patrol
• Cobb Elder Abuse Task Force
• District Attorney’s Office –cold cases
• Community Outreach
If you or someone you know would like to volunteer at the Marietta Police Department contact Officer Gunkle at 770-794-5353.
