Mischief Night/Halloween Curfew information and Halloween Safety Tips

The Township of North Brunswick will have a curfew for all children under the age of 18 for Mischief Night, October 30 and Halloween, October 31. No children under 18 will be permitted to be on the street and public areas after 8 p.m. both nights.

Since Halloween is on a Saturday, it is recommended that trick or treating not start until after 12 p.m.

Due to potential conflicts with school related activities, any curfew restrictions imposed on October 30th and 31st will be relaxed for students coming from or going to school sanctioned activities, according to the North Brunswick Police Department.

In order to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable and safe Halloween, here are some tips and precautions for parents, children and motorists from the National Safety Council.

For Trick-or-Treaters

• All children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by a responsible adult.
• Children should travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and avoid trick-or-treating alone.
• Children should never enter a stranger’s home.
• Parents should insist that treats be brought home for inspection before anything is eaten, then examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before their children eat them. When in doubt, throw it out.
• Parents and children need to look both ways before crossing the street and use established crosswalks whenever possible.
• Walk on sideways, not the street. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the far edge of the road facing traffic.
• Walk, do not run, from house to house.
• If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to make sure they are visible.

For Motorists

All motorists need to be especially alert and cautious when driving on Halloween because of the high number of pedestrians walking the streets.

• Obey the rules of the road, especially with regard to speed and prohibited distractions, such as cell phone use.
• Watch for children darting out from between parked cars.
• Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.
• Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.
• At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!
