Pedestrian Safety Operation
During morning commute hours on Monday, October 26, 2015, Officers from the Newark Police Department and an Officer from the California Highway Patrol conducted a Pedestrian Safety Operation. The Pedestrian Safety Operation was an effort focused on pedestrian safety due to several recent pedestrian related vehicle collisions. During this operation, non-uniformed members of the Newark Police Department crossed streets in marked pedestrian crosswalks while Officers monitored drivers’ compliance. The Pedestrian Safety Operation resulted in the issuance of 79 citations and 15 verbal warnings. There were also 5 drivers contacted that either were unlicensed or had a suspended driver license.
Additionally, Officers who participated in the Pedestrian Safety Operation used this opportunity to speak directly to drivers and provide education regarding pedestrian right-of-way laws and other associated traffic laws.
