The Newark Police Department is releasing information about crime and police activity that has occurred within our community.

October 5, 2015

0545 Hours: Officers were dispatched to a car vs motorcycle collision on Thornton Avenue at St Edward’s Street. Upon arrival, officers located a motorcyclist down in the intersection and the involved vehicle parked a short distance away. The driver of the car made a left turn from Thornton Avenue towards St Edward’s Street cutting in front of the motorcyclists. Both vehicles sustained major damage. The motorcyclist received life threatening injuries and was transported to a local trauma center. The investigation is on going and no arrests or citations have been issued.

1141 Hours: Officer Musantry investigated an embezzlement case from Hollister Co. (NewPark Mall). A 23 year old female of Fremont was arrested for stealing money and clothing items from her employer. She was later released on a citation.

1543 Hours: Officers were dispatched to a solo vehicle collision on Cedar Blvd just south of Thornton Avenue where a box truck collided with a light pole. The light pole was destroyed and was blocking the southbound lanes of Cedar Blvd. The driver was identified as a 37 year old male from San Jose. He was issued a citation for driving without a license.

1654 Hours: Officer Musantry, Officer Jackman, and Officer Lopez were at Newark Jr. High School assisting with a medical issue involving a student. While speaking to the involved juvenile, his mother a 52 year old female of Newark arrived on scene and refused to provide her identification. She claimed to be the juvenile’s mother but stated she didn’t have to provide her name or address. Officer Musantry attempted to explain he was not releasing the juvenile to her until he knew who she was and where she lived. Officer Musantry asked for her ID and she agreed to get it out of the car. She removed her ID from her purse and held it up for Officer Musantry to see, but attempted to cover up her name, birthdate, and address. Officer Musantry quickly grabbed the ID out of her hand in an attempt to positively identify her. This caused the mother to become enraged. She grabbed at the ID and began to push Officer Musantry. She yelled at and pushed Officer Musantry who was trying to calm her down. Officer Lopez quickly arrived to assist Officer Musantry in calming the female. She was detained by both officers and handcuffed. She was later booked at Fremont Jail for delaying and interfering with an officer.

1911 Hours: Officer Geser investigated a traffic collision on Central Ave. where a vehicle overturned after striking a fire hydrant. The solo occupant of the vehicle was treated and released for minor injuries at the scene.

1949 Hours: Officer Mapes handled another traffic collision (vehicle vs. parked vehicle) that occurred in the parking lot of Community Center Park.

0224 Hours: Officer Norvell responded to an unwanted guest call at a residence on Joaquin Murieta Ave. and arrested a 49 year old male of Newark for a felony warrant and two misdemeanor warrants. He was booked at Santa Rita Jail.

October 6, 2015

1910 Hours: Officer Geser investigated a hit & run traffic collision that occurred in the Safeway Center parking lot.

1921 Hours: Officer Homayoun handled a warrant arrest at the front counter. A 27 year old male of Newark was issued a new court date for his traffic warrant.

0009 Hours: A pedestrian stop at Lido Faire Shopping Center by Officers Mapes and Homayoun resulted in the arrest of a 51 year old female of San Leandro for a Felony warrant and a 45 year old male of San Leandro for possession of drug paraphernalia. The female was booked at Santa Rita Jail and the male was cited and released at the scene.

October 7, 2015

1814 Hours: Officer Taylor arrested a 58 year old male from Newark for public intoxication. He was booked at Santa Rita Jail.

1917 Hours: During a security check of Mayhews Landing Park, Officer Homayoun arrested a 39 year old male from Newark for 11377(a)H&S – possession of dangerous drugs and 11364.1(a)H&S possession of drug paraphernalia. He was cited and released at the scene.


October 8, 2015

1406 Hours: Officer Knutson responded to the Newpark Mall Macy’s for a shoplifter in custody. Officer Knutson accepted the citizen arrest of a 38 year old female of Newark for petty theft (484 PC). She was issued a notice to appear in court and was released.

1447 Hours: Officer Katz contacted and arrested a 51 year old transient female for possessing dangerous drugs (11377 H&S). She was issued a citation and released.

1801 Hours: Officers were dispatched to a disturbance in the 35100 block of Newark Boulevard. As a result, Officer Slater arrested a 51 year old transient female for violation of a court order. She was booked at Santa Rita Jail.

2025 Hours: Officer Johnson investigated a theft of jewelry from Macy’s valued at approximately $12,000. The suspect attempted to purchase the jewelry with her “grandfather’s” Macy’s account number and when the associate refused the suspect caused a scene, prompting the associate to get a manager. The associate placed the jewelry in a bag behind the counter. Once the associate left the immediate area, the suspect lifted a child (related, but not her own) up and over the sales counter at which time the child grabbed the bag of the jewelry and both the suspect and child fled the store. (See October 10, 2015 for details regarding the arrest of the suspect.)

0222 Hours: Officer Johnson contacted a 20 year old male of Newark as he was rummaging through a vehicle in the driveway of a residence in the 52000 block of Edgewater Drive. The male told Officer Johnson this was his residence; further investigation revealed he was lying. As a result, Officer Johnson arrested the male and a further search revealed multiple items of stolen property in his possession. Other officers assisted Officer Johnson in making contact with additional auto burglary victims in the area. This was an outstanding spot by Officer Johnson and great teamwork by all of those involved. If you were a victim of a vehicle theft in the area of Edgewater drive on October 7th or 8th please contact Officer Johnson. The male was booked at Fremont Jail for 484 PC – petty theft, 496 PC – possession of stolen property, and 11357 (c) – possession of concentrated cannabis.

October 9, 2015

2057 Hours: A 53 year male from Newark was arrested for rummaging through the interior of a vehicle on Dupont Avenue. He was arrested for 10852 CVC- tampering with a vehicle and transported to Santa Rita Jail.

1948 Hours: Officer Rodgers investigated battery that occurred between roommates that live at in the 36500 block of Cherry Street. A 67 year male from Newark was determined to be the aggressor in the battery and was also reported to have brandished a kitchen knife at his roommate. The roommate pressed charges against the suspect and he was booked at Santa Rita Jail for brandishing a knife and battery.

October 10, 2015

1444 Hours: Officer Jackman accepted the arrest of a 39 year old female of Hayward after she was stopped for shoplifting women’s clothing items from Macy’s at NewPark Mall. She was released on a citation.

1515 Hours: Officer Nobbe investigated a domestic violence incident at the Second Chance. The victim, who has a restraining order against the suspect a 31 year old male from Hayward, was contacted while she was at the shelter. During the contact, the suspect became violent and struck the victim in the face. The suspect fled but was later contacted by Fremont PD and detained. He was taken into custody and booked at Santa Rita Jail for violation of a restraining order and domestic violence.

1606 Hours: Officer Jackman arrested a 25 year old male of Newark for violation of a court order, when he went to the victim’s address in the 35800 block of Cherry Street. The suspect was contacted near the residence and taken into custody without incident. He was later booked at Santa Rita Jail

2149 Hours: Officer Johnson continued his theft investigation from Macy’s involving a theft of jewelry. (See October 8th log) Today, Officer Smith was dispatched to a residence in the 36300 block of Beech Pl. for a disturbance. The caller reported that a female was banging on the door of the residence yelling and screaming. Realizing this as one of the potential addresses for the suspect in Macy’s case, Officer Johnson gave Officer Smith the suspect description. Upon arrival, Officer Smith detained a 32 year old female from Newark who matched the description of the original theft suspect. Officer Johnson arrived on scene and arrested the female who was still wearing some of the stolen jewelry.

October 11, 2015

0929 Hours: Officer Mapes arrested a 50 year old male of Newark who had an outstanding warrant. He was later released with a new court date on a promise to appear.

1359 Hours: Officer Musantry contacted a 41 year old male of Newark. During the contact a syringe with suspected heroin was recovered. The substance tested presumptive positive for heroin. Thomas was arrested for 11350 H&S- possession of heroin and later released on a citation and a court date.

1429 Hours: Officer Katz conducted a traffic enforcement stop of a 28 year old male from Newark. The driver was found to be driving on a suspended license and he had two no cite warrants for his arrest. He was arrested on his warrants and booked at Fremont Jail.

1715 Hours: Officer Mapes contacted and arrested a 32 year old male of Newark who had two warrants for his arrest out of Newark. He was booked at Fremont Jail.

2005 Hours: Officer Mavrakis observed two males who were nearly struck by passing vehicles on Thornton Avenue. A 48 year old transient male and a 32 year old transient male were both determined to be very intoxicated. They were both placed under arrest for being drunk in public. They were transported to Santa Rita Jail.

October 12, 2015

0947 Hours: Officer Mapes responded to a family disturbance involving a male and female. During the investigation it was learned the female had an outstanding misdemeanor traffic warrant for her arrest. The 32 year old female from Newark was arrested on her warrant and later released on a promise to appear.

1044 Hours: Officer Katz conducted a probation search of the female and located a glass pipe used to smoke methamphetamine. Officer Katz arrested a 48 year old transient female for 11364.1 H&S- possession of drug paraphernalia. She was cited and released with a court date.

1405 Hours: Officer Neithercutt conducted a traffic enforcement stop on 29 year old male of Hayward. A traffic warrant was located for the driver for driving with a suspended license. He was arrested for his warrant and released on a promise to appear. He was also issued a new citation for you guessed it driving with a suspended license.
