PCSO Deputies Arrested Woman Who Was Teaching Juvenile to Steal

At approximately 12:45 pm, on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, 32-year-old April Layton, Grandview Parkway, Davenport, entered the Target retail store Located at 5000 Grandview Parkway Davenport. A juvenile younger than 16-years of age was with Layton.

A Target loss prevention employee observed Layton and the juvenile go to the cosmetics department and select several items together. Layton and the juvenile were then observed scanning the ceiling and the aisle looking for surveillance cameras and individuals who might be watching their activity.

After they selected seven specific items, they placed the items into a Target bag. Layton gave the bag to the juvenile and directed the juvenile out of the store as she stayed behind and paid for other items. The juvenile was stopped outside the store by store loss prevention employees.

During the investigation, Layton told detectives she had been teaching the juvenile how to shoplift and had done this at least once before at a different business. The items taken from Target were valued at $44.23.

“It’s heartbreaking to think this adult was giving specific direction to a child on how to commit a crime as if she were teaching the child how to ride a bike,” said Sheriff Grady Judd. “She proved she is not only a thoughtless criminal, but she is also an unfit example for any child to emulate.”

Detectives charged Layton with Contributing the Delinquency of a Minor and Retail Theft, she was booked into the Polk County Jail. The juvenile was charged with Retail Theft and taken the Juvenile Assessment Center.

April Layton has been in the Polk County Jail seven times prior to this incident and she served a two year prison sentence from October 2010 through March 2012.

Her criminal arrest history includes 13 prior felony charges, seven prior misdemeanor charges, and one unknown level charge.
