Media Release

Hawaiʻi Island police have located a Kailua-Kona man who was wanted on an arrest warrant for violating probation and for questioning in other cases.

At 4:20 a.m. Wednesday (September 30), Kona Patrol officers arrested 25-year-old Tevita Afu in Hōlualoa and charged him with violating probation.

He was also arrested on suspicion of theft and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. The theft offense was for a backpack that was taken from a property on Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona on July 8. The unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle offense was for a moped that was taken from a home on Kahakai Road in Kailua-Kona on August 23.

Afu was taken to the Kona police cellblock while detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigations. Meanwhile, he appeared in court Wednesday morning for the probation violation charge and is being held without bail on that offense.

After court, detectives returned Afu to the Kona cellblock. At noon they charged him with two counts of theft—one for the backpack and the other for a different moped theft that occurred on Walua Road in Kailua-Kona on July 8. His bail was set at $20,000 for those offenses and his initial court appearance on those charges is scheduled for Thursday.

The August 23 moped theft case is still under investigation.
