On 9-28-2015, the 47th District Attorney’s Office accepted charges of robbery under cause #71159-Z against Denzale Tyree Smith BM 22, of Amarillo. This charge stems from a 4-28-15 robbery of the Family Dollar Store at 433 S. Western. In that incident, a handgun-armed suspect robbed two female employees and ran out carrying the money in a white trash bag.
Smith was already in custody at the Potter County Detention Center on prior robbery charges, including an aggravated robbery charge filed under #70748-Z. That charge was filed in connection with a 3-18-15 robbery of the same Family Dollar at 433 S. Western. In that case, a handgun armed suspect had an employee open a register at the store and he took the money. That case was filed 7-2-15. Smith was arrested in the common area of apartments at 1550 S. Bell on 7-3-15.
Smith has also been charged with robbery under cause 71127-Z, a robbery of the Motel 6 at 4301 IH-40 East. That robbery was reported 6-1-2015, and the charge was accepted and then filed on 9-18-15. In that incident, the suspect jumped over the motel counter, pointed a handgun at the desk clerk’s head, and took money from a cash register drawer.
Investigators recovered a toy gun that they believe may have been used in at least one of the robberies at a home in northwest Amarillo. Smith is listed in custody at the Potter County Detention Center.
