TAKING BACK UNWANTED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m
(San Gabriel, CA) - The San Gabriel Police Department will again collaborate with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the 10th National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. This is yet another opportunity for members of the public who missed the previous events or have accumulated unwanted/unused prescription drugs to safely dispose of those medications. The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked.
In the previous nine Take-Back events nationwide from 2010-2014, over 4.8 million pounds (2,411 tons) of prescription medication were safely removed from circulation at collection sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners.
This initiative addresses a vital public health issue and provides a safe, secure and environmentally responsible means to dispose of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse and trafficking. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines - flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash - both pose potential safety and health hazards.
The San Gabriel Police Department will act as an official drug collection site on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. You may bring your unwanted prescription drugs to the department located at 625 South Del Mar Avenue, San Gabriel, CA 91776.
