Dig Safely Around Underground Utilities – Call 8-1-1

The Sausalito Police Department and City of Sausalito’s Disaster Preparedness Committee would like to remind people that utility lines run above and below ground and that they should be cautious of this when doing landscaping work around their houses. One of the largest underground utility line systems is operated by PG&E. PG&E operates, maintains, and monitors a natural gas system across California. Their larger transmission pipelines carry gas from one part of the state to another. Smaller lines connect to the transmission lines to distribute natural gas for heating and cooking to homes and businesses. These smaller lines are the ones that are most often struck and damaged during digging, fencing, or excavating on private property. It is recommended that people always call 8-1-1 at least two working day before any project is started that involves digging so PG&E can mark gas pipelines and other underground utilities lines in the area of the digging. PG&E marks these pipelines and utility lines for free.
