9/18/15, press release: School Lock Down

On September 18, 2015, at approximately 8:03 am, the Burlington Police received a 911 call from the Flynn School, in which staff relayed information obtained from some students. A small group of students, who were playing outside, reported seeing a white male standing just north of the school fence line, with what appeared to be a handgun in his possession. Several of the students reported seeing the male raise the firearm and possibly discharge the weapon.

Upon seeing what they believed was a firearm being discharged they immediately notified a school employee who was outside as well. This specific employee advised he heard what sounded like a “pop” prior to the students’ report, but on its own, did not think much about it. With this new information he immediately notified the school administration and a lock down was initiated and the police were notified.

Police officers immediately secured the area and began a preliminary investigation and canvas of the area. At this time we have found no physical evidence to collaborate a firearm was fired, nor was a male, matching the description provided, located. After exhausting all leads and investigating all potential threats, it was determined the school was safe to return to normal operations and the lock down was revoked. Since then we have learned that a transformer had reportedly blown in the vicinity of the incident. We will continue to look into all leads.

The Burlington Police would like to recognize the Burlington School District for its quick response in ensuring the safety of the children, not only at the Flynn School, but the surrounding schools as well. We would also like to recognize and thank the parents who could not leave the school or enter the school for their patience and understanding.

We ask anyone who may have direct or indirect information to please call Corporal Brian Difranco at 540-2235 or Crime Stoppers at 864-6666.
