Early Morning Crash Sends Hagerstown Student to Hospital

Hagerstown – A single vehicle crash this morning sent a Hagerstown High School student to IU Health’s Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie with a back injury as well as cuts and bruises. Troopers responded to Dalton road, in the area of Lamar Rd., around 7:45 a.m. for the report of a single vehicle roll over crash.

Trooper Doug Snyder arrived to find a 2000 Ford F-150 off the east side of Dalton Road on its top.  The driver had been held in the driver’s seat by the seatbelt, and not ejected.  Preliminary investigation is that the truck was traveling south at a high rate of speed when, for an unknown reason, the right side of the vehicle drifted off the roadway.

The driver, Elle B Hallwarth, age 17, over corrected to the left with the truck crossing the roadway into the ditch where it flipped 1-2 times coming to rest on its top. Hallwarth, who was on her way to school at Hagerstown, was transported by Culberson EMS to IU Health’s Ball Memorial Hospital. Trooper Snyder said “Seatbelt usage was effective in reducing Miss Hallwarths injuries and preventing her from being ejected.”

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, about half of the fatalities that occur in roll over crashes happen when occupants are partially or completely ejected from the vehicle. In all types of crashes, nearly 3/4th‘s of those ejected are killed.

Seatbelts save lives; so before you leave, make sure everyone in your vehicle is properly buckled up.
