Public Safety Training Exercises on Friday, September 11th

Marin public safety agencies and first responders will be participating in training exercises in Larkspur and Sausalito on Friday morning, September 11th. These exercises are a part
of the annual Urban Shield regional training event.

In Larkspur, the training area is located just south of the SMART train tunnel and adjacent to Highway 101. Emergency response vehicles and personnel will be on the gravel construction site directly above the Cinemark Theaters at 500 Larkspur Landing Circle. The participants will be visible to traffic travelling in both directions on the freeway. The second training location is in Sausalito on a vessel tied up at the Army Corps of Engineers’ dock at 2100 Bridgeway, next to the Bay Model. Both exercises will operate between approximately 8:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Public safety partners from throughout the county are involved in the exercises, including Central Marin Police Authority, Larkspur and San Rafael Fire Departments, San Rafael Police, Marin County Sheriff, California Highway Patrol, Marin County Office of Emergency Services, Sonoma Marin Rail Transit District (SMART), and PG&E.

Urban Shield, now in its ninth year, is a coordinated training exercise that takes place over a four day period. It brings local, national, and international first responder agencies together to train, test, and enhance the skills and abilities of regional first responders, as well as those responsible for coordinating and managing large scale events.

The goal of Friday’s exercise is to engage Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) throughout the Bay Area Region and promote coordination across agencies and jurisdictions in response to a complex scenario. In Marin, this will involve live communication from the field sites to the Marin County Sheriff’s EOC and the regional coordination of needed resources and mutual aid; as well as testing communications methods, information sharing, and public information and warning systems.
