Suspect wanted for 1998 murder arrested in Mexico

DATE OF RELEASE: September 8, 2015

On Thursday, September 3, 2015, members of the U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force and Detectives with the West Covina Police Department in conjunction with Mexican law enforcement arrested David Armando Caldera, 39, in Tehuacan, Puebla, Mexico wanted in connection of a murder that occurred 17 years earlier.

Caldera, identified as a local gang member, fled to Mexico following the murder of 14 year old Jose Luis Ramirez of La Puente, who was shot and killed on the school grounds of Giano School on February 13, 1998.

Detectives from the West Covina Police Department spent many years conducting follow-up on this case, re-opening it on several occasions. Recently, information was developed as to the location of Caldera’s whereabouts and a warrant for Caldera’s arrest was obtained. Detectives then contacted the U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force who coordinated with the Mexican authorities. Caldera was located and arrested without incident early Thursday morning, September 3, 2015 in Tehuacan, Puebla, Mexico. Caldera was immediately deported by Mexican Immigration and returned to the US via the Los Angeles International Airport late Thursday evening.

Caldera was booked at the West Covina Police Department on September 3, 2015 and is currently being held without bail at the Los Angeles County Jail.
