For immediate release: 09/08/2015 9:45 a.m.

Valdez, AK – Valdez Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene of a fatal all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident early Monday evening.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday, Valdez Police and Fire Dispatch received a report of an ATV accident on the snowmachine loop trail adjacent to Mineral Creek West Dike Trail. A group of teenagers out riding discovered the rollover accident and called 911.

Fire Department emergency medical personnel and several police officers immediately responded. A Valdez police officer was the first on scene and found 62-year old Karen Davey Stewart unresponsive under her ATV. The officer removed the machine and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Fire Department emergency medical technicians provided advanced life support care on scene and transported Ms. Stewart by ambulance to Providence Valdez Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased.

Next of kin have been notified. The circumstances surrounding Ms. Stewart’s accident and the cause of her death remain under investigation.

In 1990, Ms. Stewart became one of the founders of the World Extreme Skiing Championships in Valdez, pioneering helicopter skiing in Alaska and shaping what the ski industry looks like today.

Ms. Stewart was an active member of the Valdez community and her bright spirit brought joy to countless friends, family, and community members. She was an active part of Valdez Gold Rush Days, Valdez United Way and Junior Achievement. Karen volunteered as a member of the Valdez Museum and Historical Archive Association, City of Valdez Economic Diversification Commission, and many other community service organizations.
