Theft and Vehicle Burglary Prevention Tips from Redwood City PD - Protect Your Valuables and Don't Be a Victim!

Busy commercial areas are always susceptible to criminal activity such as theft and vehicle burglaries. These types of crimes in commercial areas typically occur during the day or early evening hours, as this is when these areas are the busiest. The perpetrators are often opportunists and the keys to reducing your chances of being victimized are prevention and vigilance.

Unattended items in crowded areas area always tempting to thieves, keep a close eye on the valuables you are carrying with you. Be mindful of where you put them when visiting restaurants, coffee shops, and other crowded businesses. Purses, briefcases, back packs, cell phones, and laptops are always items that are targeted by thieves – be sure to keep them close and in sight.

Always keep the following in mind when parking your vehicle:

1. Be sure all doors are locked and windows are up;

2. Never leave valuable items in your vehicle;

3. If you do have to leave valuables behind, lock them in the trunk or at least make sure they are not visible through the windows;

4. Whenever possible, park in well-lit areas.

The most common form of entry into vehicles is by smashing a window. If there are easily accessible valuables in plain sight this presents an opportunity for the burglar.

Be vigilant and don’t hesitate to call 911 is you see someone acting in a suspicious manner. Individuals who are systematically moving through parking structures trying to open vehicle doors or looking into windows should be reported.
