A minimum-security state prison inmate from Sioux Falls has been placed on escape status after leaving the prison grounds without authorization.
Inmate Frederick Montgomery, age 39, was last seen at approximately 1:45 p.m. today. Escape procedures were enacted after it was discovered Montgomery left the Sioux Falls Community Work Center, the Department of Corrections (DOC) facility housing minimum-security inmates and Community Transition Program parolees on the grounds of the State Penitentiary.
DOC staff members contacted the Sioux Falls Police Department, who had contact with Montgomery at an apartment complex in Sioux Falls. The investigation was turned over to the Sioux Falls Police Department at that time.
Montgomery is serving a sentence of 15 years in prison with10 years suspended for aggravated assault out of Minnehaha County. Additional sentence information is available on the DOC website at doc.sd.gov/adult/lookup/.
Montgomery is a black male, 5-feet-11 and weighs approximately 255 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
Leaving a non-secure correctional facility without authorization constitutes second-degree escape, a class 5 felony, and is punishable by a maximum of 5 years.
Anyone who sees Montgomery or knows of his whereabouts should contact law enforcement immediately. South Dakota Codified Law 22-11A-5 states that any person who conceals any prisoner knowing that the prisoner has escaped is guilty of a Class 5 felony.
