DON'T LEAVE YOUR GARAGE DOOR OPEN TO CRIME

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station patrol deputies have seen an abundance of occasions where the garage door to a residence has been left open by the homeowner when there is no one in sight. The open garage presents an easy opportunity to anyone driving or walking by to commit theft of items in plain sight, such as bicycles, power tools, golf clubs and other items of value. It takes only a few seconds for someone to enter the garage and take something.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Detective Geoff Elliott recommends the practice of doing a double take when you close your garage door, to make sure that it actually remains shut.  Many garage doors have a safety feature that will trigger the door to open again if an object activates the sensor. Detective Elliott also says, “If you’re worried that someone knows the code to open your garage door or your remote has been stolen, it’s time to change to the code on your garage door opener.”

If you see any suspicious vehicles or persons in your neighborhood, get a good description and license plate number and call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at (661) 255-1121, or dial 9-1-1 in an emergency.

Should you wish to remain anonymous, call "LA Crime Stoppers" by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org
