Everett man killed in car vs. bicycle collision near Mattawa
MATTAWA, Wash. (01SEPT2015) – A 62-year-old Everett, Wash., man was killed Tuesday morning when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle near Mattawa.
Greg Gelderman was riding a bicycle in the eastbound lane of Road 24-Southwest just east of State Route 243 when he was struck from behind around 7:20 a.m. by a 2005 Chrysler 300 driven by 38-year-old Juana Hernandez of Mattawa.
Gelderman died at the scene. His body is in the care of Grant Coroner Craig Morrison whose staff will conduct an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death. Gelderman’s family has been notified.
An 11-year-old passenger in Hernandez’s car complained of neck pain and was treated. There were no other injuries.
The rising sun interfering with Fernandez’s field of vision appears to have contributed to the collision. Alcohol and drugs were not a factor. All occupants in Hernandez’s car were wearing their seatbelts. No citations or charges are expected.
