Two Vehicle Crash Sends Two to the Hospital

White County-Today at approximately 1:22 p.m. on I-65 SB near the 188 MM (that is one half mile north of the SR 18/188 exit), a van rear ends a semi causing it to roll several times injuring two occupants of the van.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Brock Russell has revealed that a maroon 2000 GMC Sienna van driven by Shiann J. Hayes, 21 of Indianapolis was SB when she drove into the back of a 2013 Polar tanker trailer.  The tanker was being pulled by a 2015 Volvo semi driven by Joe D. Vanschepen Jr. 48 of Morgantown, NC.  The van went down into the right shoulder and rolled several times before coming to rest on its wheels.  It appears that neither driver nor passenger was wearing seatbelts for both were tossed around inside of the van.

The passenger, Broderick V. Bullock Jr, 31 of Plainfield, IN was transported by ambulance to IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette with non-life threatening injuries.  Hayes was also transported to IU Arnett and later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with life threatening injuries.  Vanschepen Jr. was not injured in the crash and the trailer sustained minor damage.  The van was a total loss.  It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the crash.  Tests are pending.  The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were Sergeant Kim Riley, Troopers Weslee Ennis and Master Trooper Larry Mote Jr. of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division of the Indiana State Police, Chalmers/Brookston EMS, Monticello Fire Department and Farney’s Wrecker Service out of Wolcott, IN.

Suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
