PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF

Aug 24 - 30, 2015

Any charges reported in this press release are merely accusations

and the Defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

DUI:  Justin Tracy Davenport, DOB 04/16/1985 of Anchorage, was arrested for Misconduct involving Weapons 4th and Driving under the Influence. His breath alcohol content was .127

Traffic Hazard:  A caller reported a 12 foot pole with wire sticking out of it lying on the road.  He kicked it off to the side so no one would run it over.  A Community Safety Officer responded and picked up the debris.

Animal at Large:  An owner reported his dog got loose and requested assistance in catching him.  The Animal Control Officer tried to locate the dog but he had left the area.

Reckless Driving:  Two cars were reported drag racing down W Lowe Street.  An Officer responded to the area and issued the subjects a warning.

ATV:  While on patrol an Officer stopped an ATV.  The driver was not wearing a helmet and was issued a warning; the minor child had a helmet on.

Parking Problems:  A caller reported 8 vehicles parked on the bike path at Dayville road.  An Officer responded to the area and found two RV’s and a vehicle parked on the bike path.  There were too many people in the area to locate the drivers.

Animal at Large:  A big white pit-bull was running at large around the harbor.  An Officer responded but the dog had already left the area.

Trespassing:  A 3rd party caller reported a man with a sledge hammer up Solomon Gulch trail at the gate breaking rocks to get around the gate.  An Officer responded to the area but only found crushed rocks by the gate.  Some large boulders were going to be placed there to secure the gate.

Citizen Assist:  An Officer assisted a citizen with boat issues.

Sound of Shots Fired:  Two complaints were reported of gun shots heard.  An Officer responded to the area but did not find any fireworks or hear anything else.

Information Report:  A man called to report he was being harassed; he did not want an Officer to call him back he just wanted it documented.

Disturbance Noise:  A caller reported a group of people outside being loud and a smell of marijuana.  An Officer responded to the area and found nine fish processing workers drinking.  They were being cooperative and cleaned up their mess and headed back to the dorms.

Drugs:  A woman requested to speak with an Officer about numerous people that were drugged at a local bar.  An Officer spoke with her and advised her to tell the patrons to contact the Police Department.

Disturbance Bar:   A caller requested Officer Assistance to remove a patron that was trying to fight everyone and refusing to leave.  An Officer responded to the scene but the patron had already left the area. 

Disturbance Bar:  Another fight at the bar.  Officers responded and saw someone running by a local business and investigated.  A wallet was also turned over to the Officer.

Title 47 ETOH:  While on patrol an Officer saw a male walking down the middle of the Richardson Hwy.  The Officer attempted to contact a family member for a ride for the individual but was unable to contact them. The Officer then tried to call him a cab and he refused.  The subject insisted he was going to continue to walk the highway so the Officer took him in to protective custody. 

Serve Time:  Steven Oran Marchant, DOB 8/3/82 of Valdez, checked into the Valdez Jail to serve 3 days on original charges of Driving under the Influence

MVA-D:  A report of an RV hitting the back of another vehicle was received.  Minor damage, no injuries and both parties were at the scene.  An Officer responded to investigate and spoke with the parties involved.

Welfare Check:  A request to check on three children that were missing from school since Friday was received.  The school could not reach the parents.  An Officer checked on the children and they were all fine and would be in school tomorrow.

Serve Time:  Nicholas Kanoe Huff, DOB 5/13/85 of Valdez, was sentenced to serve 50 years with 25 suspended on original charges of Attempt Murder.

Camping Prohibited Area:  The Animal Control Officer contacted an RV out of British Columbia and advised them to have no open fires or charcoal camping fires in the parking lot.

Serve Time:  Douglas John Evans, DOB 6/19/68 of Valdez was sentenced to serve 50 years with 20 suspended on original charges of Sexual Assault of Minor.

Welfare Check:  A mother requested a welfare check on her son who she thought might try to commit suicide.  He had been fighting with his girlfriend, who is hiding from him.  An Officer made contact with the subject and he just wanted time alone.  He did not have any weapons and denied any suicidal thoughts or anything similar.

Animal at Large:  A Community Safety Officer found a dog at large and followed the dog back to its home.

Agency Assistance:  Matcom requested an officer do a welfare check on a mother, whose son had not heard from her in about a month.  Dispatch was able to speak with the mother who was fine.  She said she would give her son a call.

Animal at Large:  A report of a husky/Sheppard mix and a brown lab chasing rabbits outside of South Central Hardware was received.  The Animal Control Officer responded to the area but the dogs had left the area.

Fake Money:  First National Bank requested an officer to pick up a counterfeit bill.

Parking Problems:  The Harbormaster’s Office reported a silver Chevy with a trailer parked in a no parking zone in their area. The Community Safety Officer left a door hanger informing of the parking ordinances for Valdez. 

Welfare Check:  A report of a black Honda accord parked at blueberry hill all day long was received.  An Officer contacted the neighbors in the area which informed him that the vehicle has been in the area quite a bit throughout the summer.  The Officer walked down the trail to see if the owner of the vehicle could be located, but did not find anyone in the area. 

Bear Related Calls:  A report of tourists interacting with bears at the Hatchery was received.  The Animal Control Officer responded to the area but the bear had gone into the bushes and everyone was leaving the area.

MICS Meth:  Joshua Alexander Tucker, DOB 8/8/92 of Valdez, was arrested for MICS 3rd and two counts of MICS 4th.

Traffic Hazard:  A driver reported driving over a rock or something at Glacier Stream Bridge.  Did not know if it came from a passing vehicle or if it was kicked up.  The Community Safety Officer responded to the area and moved the rock out of the roadway.

Fireworks:  Several calls were received regarding fireworks at the harbor.  The Community Safety Officers located the fireworks and contacted the individuals.  They agreed to stop shooting fireworks.

Title 47 ETOH:  A caller reported a man lying on the ground, intoxicated, unable to tell her who he is or where he needs to go.  An Officer responded to the area and took the subject into protective custody for the night.

Domestic Non Arrest:  A woman reported that she had a fight with her boyfriend and requested to speak with an Officer.

Welfare Check:  A welfare check was requested on a male that has been depressed and has talked about suicide in the past.  An Officer located the subject and took him to the counseling center.

Camping Prohibited Area:  While on Patrol the Community Safety Officer saw a vehicle in violation of camping.  He did not find anyone in the area so he left a door hanger explaining the City Camping Ordinances.

Stalking Order Short Term:  A short term Protective Order was served to an individual.

Traffic Hazard:  A report of 2 roofing panels on the side of Airport Rd was received.  The caller believed they could be a hazard later with the wind.  An Officer responded to the area, it appeared that the metal came from the railroad property. 

Welfare Check:  A caller reported a woman trying to walk down the street and a male continuously harassing her, not letting her walk.   Officers responded to the area and drove around but could not find anyone fitting the description given.

Traffic Hazard:  A caller reported the barrels and net at the new harbor project were blowing around and were in the road.  The Community Safety Officer responded to the area and moved the barrels off the road.

Citizen Assist:  While on patrol the Community Safety Officer saw a trailer blowing around the parking lot.  He moved the trailer to a parking space and secured it with wheel chalks.

DUI:   Juan Carlos Berrocal, DOB 1/13/64 of Valdez, was arrested for Driving under the Influence and Breath Test Refusal.

Events deemed Unsafe:  A report of possible power lines down was received.  An Officer responded to the area and made contact with CVEA, they will be sending out a line crew.  The Officer stayed in the area until CVEA showed up.

Harassment:  A caller requested an Officer to look at some texts he received.

Traffic Hazard:  While on patrol an Officer saw some trees down and talked with tourist who had moved the trees to get around them.  City Shop was called and they will remove the debris.

Motor Vehicle Accident – Damage:  A minor fender-bender was reported.  The drivers obtained each other’s names, phone numbers and insurance information.  An Officer spoke to both parties involved.

Agency Assistance:  Officers assisted the Medical crews with 5 individuals who had been aboard a boat that sank in the narrows. 

Found Property:  An individual found a long board on her porch and turned it into the Valdez Police Department.  If you have lost your long board please call the Valdez Police Department with identifying information to claim your long board.

Disturbance Noise:  A caller reported four to five people, possibly drinking and urinating on the equipment at the Skate Park.  An Officer responded to the area and spoke with several individuals from out of town. They had come to Valdez to go fishing.  They left the area to get food and then they were going to camp out.  They were not drinking or urinating on the equipment.

Fraud:  A caller reported issues with a dating application called Plenty of Fish and believed he was being blackmailed for money after some photos were exchanged.

Disturbance Other:  A report of a man being crazy was received.  He had thrown things around but then picked everything up and left the area.

Strange Activity:  A woman reported 2 girls knocked on her door asking for toilet paper.  After she gave it to them they ran off with a boy towards Safeway.  An Officer responded to the area but could not find anyone matching the description given.

Litter, Pollution, Public Health:   A caller reported that a person threw a beer can out of a vehicle.  An Officer responded to the area but the vehicle could not be located.

Trespassing:  A caller reported someone took a board off of her window.  This case is currently under investigation.

Welfare Check:   A caller reported that his son, daughter-in law and their three children left Valdez early in the morning to go to MP 50-60 to cut fire wood.  He has not heard from them since.  Dispatch contacted MATCOM and they had no reports of accidents or vehicles matching the description given.  An Officer located the vehicle as they were on their way back home; everyone was fine just ran later than expected.

Arrested:  John Everett Gladmon, DOB 6/17/91 of Anchorage was arrested for Misconduct Involving Weapons 4th, MICS 3rd and MICS 4th.

Arrested:  Dane Skyler Dellos, DOB 6/18/91 of Anchorage was arrested for MICS 3rd and MICS 4th.

Information Report:  CVEA called to report that they would be burning the smart ash at the Hydro plant and if anyone saw a red flame that it is OK.

Strange Activity:  A caller reported a suspicious person driving around a local business and acting strange.  Officers investigated the area and found the subject’s tent had blown away and he was killing time until he could go fishing.

Animal at Large:  A caller reported a man driving his car and walking his dog.  He had no control over the dog; it was not on a leash. A Community Safety Officer responded to the area but the vehicle had already left the area.

Possible Drunk Driver:  A caller reported a possible drunk driver.  An Officer located the vehicle, negative for impairment.  First time in Valdez, they were sightseeing.

Domestic Non-Arrest:  A caller reported that their neighbors were fighting and that the boyfriend was beating up the girlfriend.  Officers responded to find that it was a verbal only argument.
