Advisory

Back to School! GBPD reminds drivers to operate safely in school zones.

August 31, 2015

On Tuesday, September 1st students return to school. To make sure that every child’s commute to and from school is a safe one, the Green Bay Police Department is reminding drivers to use extreme caution when operating near all schools.

There are several laws in place designed to protect our children and failure to obey these laws not only shows disregard for their safety but can also result in citations to the offenders.

School zone speed limit – 15mph: Drivers need to be aware that schools start and close at different times of the day, when approaching any school, please be on the lookout for children. The school zone speed limits also apply during the lunch hours at the four public high schools in Green Bay.

Crossing Guards: Drivers also need to be on the look out for crossing guards whose job it is to get our children safely across busy streets. Drivers must stop for crossing guards when they are in the crosswalk with their STOP signs raised, and stay stopped until the crosswalk is completely clear. If you see a crossing guard working a corner, the 15mph speed limit probably applies.

School Buses: When a school bus is stopped with its flashing red lights all traffic must stop at least 20 feet away from the bus. This includes traffic from both directions (unless it is a divided highway). If the bus is stopped with its amber flashers operating, it is legal to pass, but pass with care.

The Green Bay Police Department will be strictly enforcing these laws to ensure the safety of our children. We will have additional patrols working school zones during school start and end times. Please obey all traffic laws and remember to buckle up.
