INCIDENT: Arrest of Wanted Sex Offender

LOCATION: Pasco County Florida

SUSPECT: John Joseph Korcz

VICTIM: State of California

SUMMARY:

Convicted sex offender John Korcz has been at large since 2007 when the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department discovered that he was not living at his registered address. Convicted sex offenders are required to notify law enforcement of their home address. An investigation was completed and a felony warrant was issued on 7-31-07.

PC 290 Coordinator Jim Black of the Sheriff’s Crimes Against Children Detail has continued to search for Korcz since 2008. On 8-14-15 a possible address for Korcz was identified in Pinellas County Florida. Working collaboratively with the U.S. Marshal’s Office and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department, Korcz was arrested without incident on 8-24-15. Korcz is facing charges for failing to register in Florida as well as Federal Charges for crossing state lines to avoid registration under the Adam Walsh Act.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for registering and monitoring approximately 2600 convicted sex offenders. Currently there are approximately 42 sex offenders who have failed to comply with their registration requirements. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department will continue to investigate and prosecute non-compliant offenders under either state law or federal law if an offender flees the state to avoid registration.
