Update - Officer Involved Shooting, 200 block of MacArthur Boulevard

On Thursday, August 27, 2015 just before 7:00 AM, Oakland Police officers who were working on graveyard shift were dispatched to the 200 block of MacArthur Boulevard on a report of an assault. The victim reported being assaulted when confronting a trespasser in the garage area of a residential complex. The officers searched the area and were unable to locate the suspect.

Due to shift change, the officers were relieved by a dayshift officer, who arrived just after 7:00 AM to continue the investigation by taking a report from the victim. At the conclusion of the officer’s preliminary investigation, she began to drive away when an individual matching the description of the suspect stepped from the sidewalk onto the roadway in front of her vehicle.

The officer got out of the vehicle and was immediately assaulted by the suspect, who began hitting her in the head and face with a chain. The suspect continued to advance toward the officer, swinging the chain. The officer discharged her firearm, striking the suspect. Medical personnel responded to the scene and pronounced the suspect deceased. The officer was transported to a local hospital, where she is being treated for trauma to the head and face. She is currently listed in stable condition.

At this time, the Oakland Police Department will not be releasing the identity of the suspect until the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau makes an official identification and is able to notify the next of kin.

The officer is an 18-year veteran of the Oakland Police Department.

Information is still preliminary at this time as multiple investigations continue. No further information is available at this time.

Consistent with Departmental policy, this officer involved shooting will be investigated by the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section and the Internal Affairs Division. An independent and concurrent investigation is also being conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

The Oakland Police Department is committed to transparency, but also to a full and complete investigative process that requires information be limited in order to maintain the integrity of the investigation. For this reason, only those preliminary details that do not compromise the investigation will be released. Additional information will be released as soon as practical.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821.
