Tip of the week: Hiking and Bike Trail Safety

As we enjoy these last weeks of summer, many are taking advantage of the hiking and biking trails we have in the area.  Here are some tips to help you enjoy them safely:

  1. Always let someone know where you are going, and what hours you plan on being gone.
  2. Be sure to bring plenty of water, food, first aid kit, and a fully charged cell phone.
  3. Stay on the designated trails and assure you remember your path back to the staging areas.
  4. When planning your trip, be aware of what time the sun sets so you don’t run out of daylight.
  5. If you do become lost, STAY IN ONE PLACE.  Call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station (661) 255-1121 or 911 and give the dispatchers the best description of where you are.  Be sure to carry ‘glow-sticks’ or a bright colored blanket that you can spread out so that rescue helicopters can better see you.

Enjoy the last few weeks of summer and have fun!
