DATE/TIME: Wednesday, August 26th, 2015 4:01 p.m.
INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Cucamonga Peak
VICTIM(S): Vinh Houng, 20 years old
Thao Nguyen, 22 years old
SUMMARY: On Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 4:01 p.m., Houng and Nguyen hiked from the Mt. Baldy Village area up towards Cucamonga Peak. At some point during the hike, Houng and Nguyen became disorientated and off the main trail. They had little water remaining and were exhausted. Unsure of their location, Houng and Nguyen used their wireless telephone and requested assistance.
Sheriff's patrol helicopter 40K5 responded in an attempt to locate Houng and Nguyen. They were located after a brief search at the 8,500 foot level. They were in steep terrain and surrounded by trees. Due to their condition and the remote location, Sheriff's Air Rescue 06 was requested to perform a rescue of Nguyen and Houng.
The crew arrived and determined a hoist rescue was necessary. The crew was unable to land due to the terrain. Nguyen an Houng were hoisted into the helicopter and flown to waiting deputies at a nearby landing site.
