DUI / License checkpoint a success on many fronts!!

On August 21, 2015, with grant funding provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, the Simi Valley Police Department conducted a DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint at the intersection of First St. and Easy St. The checkpoint ran from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. with over one thousand motorists being contacted. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

As a result of this checkpoint, 3 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence, 19 drivers were issued citations for licensing violations, and 8 other various citations were issued. Approximately 8 vehicles were impounded for licensing violations and arrests.

DUI/Driver’s License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Ninety Percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints

The Simi Valley Police Department would like to thank all the citizens who exhibited patience and understanding while waiting to pass through the checkpoint. The ultimate goal for a DUI / Licensing checkpoint is to make our community a safer place and the cooperation of our citizens helped us to achieve that goal.
