Indiana State Police will Participate in the I-80/I-35 Challenge

Lowell-Motorists will notice extra law enforcement presence when driving on two of the country’s most highly traveled interstates during a three day enforcement campaign.

Indiana State Police and law enforcement officials in 16 other states are joining together with a goal at reducing serious injury and fatal crashes.  Interstate 80 transverses eleven states, starting in California and ending in New Jersey.  Interstate 35 transverses six states, beginning in Minnesota and ending in Texas.  Both interstate systems serve as major transcontinental corridors covering 4,400 miles of roadway.  Iowa is the crossroads for both interstates and the Iowa Department of Public safety is leading this initiative.

The challenge will utilize high visibility enforcement patrols from August 28th through August 30th.  The ultimate goal of this project is to have zero fatalities on both interstates and draw much needed attention to traffic safety.  After analyzing 5 years of Interstate crash data, August 28th, 29th, and 30th have been selected, as August is the deadliest month on I-80 and one of the deadliest on I-35.

“There is zero tolerance for unsafe driving and for breaking important traffic safety laws,” said Lieutenant Terry Gose, District Commander for the Lowell District.  “Our goal here is to save lives and we will do anything it takes to make that happen and make the interstate (I-80) through Indiana safer for those who drive them every day.”
