Burglary suspect flees, security guard attempts arrest and is assaulted-APD seeking information on suspect...
On 8-14-15, at 11:15 PM, officers were sent to the 1400 block of S. Polk on stolen vehicle and a firearms offense. Responding officers found that it was actually a burglary of the Polk Street Methodist Church in which a security guard’s car was stolen and his weapon fired during his attempt to detain the suspect. The security officer responded to an alarm at the building, and was checking the building when a suspect ran out of one of the doors. The suspect got into the security officer’s car, which was running on the parking lot, and drove away. The vehicle stopped on a high curb of a parking area in the 100 block of SW. 15th. The guard had chased the man and tried to detain him at the car. There was a struggle between the men, during which the suspect assaulted the guard was able to take the guard’s handgun out of his holster. Two shots were fired during the fight to control the weapon, and the suspect then fled, leaving a pry bar and a black nylon bag he had been carrying. The guard was not injured and the handgun was recovered. The bag contained items including cologne, a blood pressure monitor, and a small scale that that may have been stolen before the church burglary. Officers found that the suspect had broken in through a window on the NE side of the church, and had burglarized a coin operated machine.
The suspect was a white male about 25 years of age, six feet tall, about 180 pounds, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and brown shorts. He was wearing a black “beanie” type hat during the incident. The suspect was last seen running west on SW 15th Avenue. While officers were still on the scene, a security officer found a gray hooded sweatshirt with a Dallas Cowboy logo on a construction area fence in the 1500 block of S. Harrison. This may have been the shirt the suspect was wearing during the incident.
