On July 9, 2015, at approximately 3:15 p.m., South Los Angeles CHP Officer Kevin Preinitz, responded to a broadcast of a possible DUI/Reckless driver traveling north on the I-405 near Crenshaw Blvd in Torrance.
Officer Preinitz observed the vehicle weaving and straddling the carpool and #1 lane with numerous vehicles being blocked behind it. Officer Preinitz turned his emergency lights on and the vehicle slowly yielded exiting the freeway at Hawthorne Blvd.
Officer Preitnitz contacted the female driver and observed lethargic movements; her face was drooping to the left side and drooling. Having been trained as an EMT, Officer Preinitz believed he was witnessing a stroke in progress and immediately requested paramedics to respond to his location.
Officer Robert Morgan arrived to assist and together they tried to keep the driver as comfortable and safe as possible until paramedics arrived.
Officers Preinitz and Morgan were presented awards for recognizing the signs and symptoms of a stroke and calling for medical aid in a timely manner, possibly saving her life. The awards were presented to the officers by Lindy Galloway-Riley, a Registered Nurse employed by Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance, CA.
We would also like to thank the concerned motorists who alerted CHP of the unusual driving behavior. Many times, these types of reports make the difference between saving a life and possibly losing one.
