Lansing Man Seriously Injured in Interstate 65 Crash.

Gary, Lake County – The Indiana State Police Lowell District investigated a crash, this Thursday, August 6, 2015, evening that seriously injured a motorcyclist. 

Preliminary investigation by Trooper William Stancy revealed that at approximately 10:45 p.m. a 2001 silver and black Suzuki motorcycle being driven by Robert J. Dykas Jr, 25, of Lansing, Illinois, ran off the roadway of Interstate 65 at the 259 mile marker (this is just north of the ramp to Interstate 80 west bound.  There were no other vehicles involved in the crash. 

Witnesses said that the driver of the motorcycle appeared to be trying to merge onto the exit ramp and that he may have misjudged the exit.  What resulted was the motorcycle ran off the roadway and drove down into a grassy area between the interstate and the exit ramp.  The driver, Dykas  was ejected from the motorcycle.  Dykas was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.  Dykas was taken by Gary EMS to North Lake Hospital in Gary, Indiana.  From there, Dykas was transported to Loyola Hospital in Chicago, Illinois with life threatening injuries. 

Investigation in to the cause of the crash is ongoing.  Preliminary investigation at the scene resulted in the recovery of suspected narcotics in the backpack of the driver.  Impairment may have been a contributing factor to the crash.  No charges have been filed at this time.
