Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports that on 08/07/2015 at 11:28am deputies responded to a personal injury accident on M-51 near Peavine St. in Pokagon Township.
Investigation at the scene determined that the driver, 20 year old Abigail Smith from Niles, MI and a passenger 21 year old Drake Brewer of Cassopolis, MI were arguing as they travelled northbound on M-51 near Peavine St. During the course of the argument Brewer opened the passenger door of the vehicle and jumped out onto the roadway from the moving vehicle. Witnesses on scene corroborated the information.
Brewer was transported by Pride Care Ambulance to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac, MI. He was then airlifted by Air Care to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI for treatment of serious injuries.
Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
Assisting at the scene was Pokagon Band Tribal Police, Dowagiac City Police, and Pokagon Fire Department. This incident remains under investigation.
