On Monday July 20, Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter promoted Trooper Matthew Simmons to the rank of Sergeant to serve as a Cyber Crimes Forensic Examiner for Area IV of the Indiana State Police.
Simmons is a Columbus native and a 2001 graduate of Columbus North High School. Simmons obtained an Associate Degree in criminal justice from IUPUI in 2009. Simmons graduated from the 67th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy in July of 2007.
Simmons was initially assigned to the Seymour District from 2007 to 2010. With the close of the Seymour post, Simmons was transferred to the Versailles District where he patrolled from 2010 to 2014. From 2014 to 2015, Simmons was assigned to the Indiana Crimes Against Children Taskforce. Simmons is certified as a field training officer and as a crash reconstructionist. Simmons is also a member of the Indiana State Police Honor Guard.
Sgt. Simmons’ new responsibilities will include assisting federal, state, and local law enforcement by conducting forensic examinations of computers, cell phones, and other digital media for evidence of criminal activity. He will also be conducting training and public information talks on cybercrime. Sgt. Simmons will cover Area IV, which includes the Versailles and Sellersburg Districts of the Indiana State Police.
Simmons and his wife Sara reside in Bartholomew County. They have three children: Aaron, Isaac, and Olivia.
