Motorcycle Unit Training
(Etowah County, Alabama) Deputies seeking to join the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office motorcycle unit are in training.
Each motor deputy is required to attend and successfully pass an extensive two-week motorcycle training program prior to being released on their own.
The training focuses on machine nomenclature, slow speed maneuvering, control, braking, curve negotiation, motorcycle maintenance, defensive driving techniques and law enforcement techniques.
Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Brian Smith is a member of the unit and also serves as a law enforcement motorcycle instructor.
“The two-week, 80 hour training will develop the coordination, skill and confidence necessary for the deputy to safely and efficiently operate the motorcycle,” says Sgt. Smith.
Sheriff Todd Entrekin says, “The motor unit is an important part of traffic enforcement and special operations support for Etowah County.”
The motorcycle unit focuses on traffic enforcement and serves at ceremonial events including VIP motorcades, parades and as traffic escorts at special events. The fleet is currently comprised of four Harley Davidson police equipped Road Kings.
