Investigation into Incident Which Occurred in 600 block of 42nd

On July 31, 2015 at 9:49 AM, Oakland Police officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop in the 600 block of 42nd Street. During the officers’ investigation they learned the driver had multiple arrest warrants for stolen property and narcotics. The driver was subsequently arrested for the warrants. He was transported to Santa Rita Jail. Upon arrival, the driver suffered a medical emergency and was transported to a local hospital. The driver is listed in critical condition. It is suspected that the driver had ingested narcotics before the officers stopped his vehicle; medical personnel removed an object from his throat. An illegally possessed loaded firearm was located in his pants.

The driver was arrested without incident and no force was used.

The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of family at this time.

In accordance with Departmental policy, Homicide and Internal Affairs Investigators were called out to conduct a follow-up investigation of the incident.
