Press Release - Bicycle Fatal Traffic Collision

At approximately 1:27 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, the Newport Beach Police Department’s Dispatch Center was notified of a traffic collision involving a bicyclist and a parked vehicle.  The collision occurred in the 1800 block of Bayside Drive. The cyclist, who had been travelling westbound on Bayside Drive, was riding an electric bicycle when he collided with a silver Mazda van that was parked on Bayside Drive, east of the intersection with El Paseo Drive.

Newport Beach Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the scene.  The cyclist was found to be conscious and responsive.  The force of the impact had fully ejected the young man from his bicycle and propelled him into the back window of the van.  The cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, suffered several lacerations as a result.  He was transported to a local trauma center in critical condition.

The cyclist, identified as 23-year-old Jonathan Wilson of Newport Beach, unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and passed away shortly after 2:30 p.m. the same afternoon.

The circumstances of the collision are still under investigation.  Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact Investigator Dave Darling at 949-644-3746 or [email protected].
