Update - Officer-Involved Shooting in 3800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way

On August 2, 2015, at approximately 9:00 PM, Oakland police officers were investigating a reported sexual assault that had occurred that evening. The investigation led officers to the 3800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way at about 1:30 AM on August 3, 2015.

While officers were in front of the residence, the suspect came out and began shooting at the officers with an assault rifle. A sergeant and officer returned fire, striking the suspect. The sergeant was shot during the exchange of gunfire. Both the sergeant and the suspect were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The suspect, a 49-year-old Oakland resident, was pronounced deceased. The sergeant is listed in serious/stable condition.

Officers have recovered a rifle from the scene. (SEE THE ATTACHED PHOTO).

The sergeant is an 14-year veteran and the officer has been with Oakland Police Department for one year.

Information is still preliminary at this time as multiple investigations continue. No further information is available.

Consistent with Departmental policy, this officer involved shooting must be investigated by the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section and the Internal Affairs Division. An independent and concurrent investigation is also being conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

The Oakland Police Department is committed to transparency, but also to a full and complete investigative process that requires information be limited in order to maintain the integrity of the investigation. For this reason, only those preliminary details that do not compromise the investigation will be released. Additional information will be released as soon as practical.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821.
