On 08-03-2015, at approximately 0103 hours, officers from the Chula Vista Police Department responded to a fight call at a residence on the 800 block of Monserate Avenue. When officers arrived on scene they found several intoxicated subjects arguing over a possible love triangle.
Officers were able to separate the involved parties and one subject agreed to leave but needed a ride home. Officers were in the front yard of the residence arranging a ride for the subject when two gunshots were heard. The officers on scene were in close proximity to the gunshots and believed they were being shot at.
A perimeter was set up around the residence in an attempt to contain the suspect. Officers then received information from subjects who exited the residence that the suspect was armed with a shotgun, under the influence of a controlled substance, and trying to flee from the backyard.
The SWAT Team & Crisis Negotiation Team were then activated. Before the SWAT Team arrived on scene the suspect was located several blocks away by officers. A shotgun believed to have been used to shoot at officers was also located in a nearby neighbor’s backyard.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident and no citizens or officers were injured from the gunshots. Investigators are currently still on scene but traffic on East L Street has been opened up. The suspect has been transported to the Chula Vista Police Department and will be later booked into county jail.
