SUV Plows into #LASD West Hollywood Deputy During Traffic Stop, 8900 blk Santa Monica Bl
In the early morning hours of Friday, July 31, 2015, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy from West Hollywood Station was conducting a traffic stop on the 8900 block of eastbound Santa Monica Boulevard when, as he stood next to the driver’s window of the detained vehicle, glanced over his shoulder and saw a Mercedes Benz sport utility vehicle (SUV) traveling toward him at a high rate of speed.
Seeing that the SUV was rapidly approaching, the deputy had no other alternative but to jump out of the way to avoid getting killed. As the deputy did so, the SUV crashed into the rear of the parked patrol car. The force of the impact caused the patrol car to plow into the deputy, throwing him into the air, then onto the hood of the mangled patrol car before he came tumbling hard on the ground.
The deputy, suffering from injuries, was able to initiate radio broadcast, advising West Hollywood Station personnel of the collision. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital in an undetermined condition.
The two adult occupants of the SUV, as well as the subjects of the initial traffic stop were not injured.
Information gathered at the scene revealed that the driver, 26 year-old Bruno Carvalho Alcantara, a resident of Los Angeles, was possibly texting at the time of the collision. He was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and was transported to West Hollywood Station where he was booked for the indicated charge. The suspect was cited and released later that day.
The deputy, a nine year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was working a single-man traffic car when the collision occurred. He was medically treated for his injuries and subsequently released from the hospital in good condition.
West Hollywood Station detectives are investigating the collision and are asking anyone with information to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's West Hollywood Station, Detective Heald at (310) 855-8850. If you prefer to provide information anonymously, you may call "Crime Stoppers" by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org.
